Volta do Mar is the culmination of a journey of discovery the founders - Isabel and Simon - made over many years. They traced their family-history through food and travel, learning how people and culture integrated and inter-married across continents and over distant seas. What they discovered on that journey was an idea that later became a restaurant - Volta do Mar – meaning; to return from the sea.

Our menus at Volta do Mar showcase the delicious regional cuisine of Portugal and celebrate the international culinary confluences from its trading past. We cook Portuguese classics and dishes from the countries and places along its former trade routes, touching on Brazil, Cape Verde, Angola, Mozambique, Goa, Macau and Japan. We want to celebrate the diversity and interconnection of Portuguese food and culture across the globe.

Food was good quality, but the portions were quite small considering the price. And the food took a while to come. The service and ambience were good - no complaints there!

Everything was really good, service was somewhat fast and friendly. The food was really amazing. Ambient and atmosphere was nice.

We came here for my birthday and it was a lovely meal. They have a good range of cocktails and wines available and the food was fantastic. We started with some snacks (olives and sourdough) with some cocktails and were hoping these would come first and then we'd have the wine with our starter, which is what the waiter implied. It all came with the starters though, which is only a minor negative. The starters were very flavoursome though - we had croquettes and prawns, the latter had a lovely spicy sauce with them. Mains were fantastic - I had the octopus which came in an almost risotto like dish and my partner said his baked salt cod was delicious. Desserts were also great and there was a good range, as I find these can sometimes be overlooked by restaurants and they all serve the same things. We then finished off with some port seeing as it's a Portuguese place! We came quite early and service was great at first, with very friendly staff who were happy to advise us, but it did get a little slower later on in the evening meaning we had to rush for our train home. A few very minor things, but overall fantastic and we'd definitely come again if in the area.

The dinner took about 1 hour to arrive at the table. The staff is nice and attentive but they are not prepared to serve when the restaurant is full.

We started with great martinis, accompanied by hand carved Iberico Ham. Menu choices centred around Portuguese influenced dishes and some fab veggie choices - the sweet potato and black bean main is the best ever. Fresh fish and char-grilled meats also. Highly recommend

Excellent food but waited >1h from starter to main course (minding that the waiter hurried to order our main courses to limit wait and we still waited 2.5h from when we arrived to the restaurant, until we had our mains...). But great food so a huge pity that waiting time was like this.
