Top Roe is a Yōshoko Japanese restaurant located in Austin Texas. Created by Executive Chef Paul Qui, there are two experiences offered under one roof: Top Roe Izakaya and Top Roe Hand Roll.

Our 12-seat handroll counter operates on a first come, first served basis. Because no one likes a soggy handroll, Top Roe’s handrolls are exclusively offered at the handroll counter. The handroll counter also encourages a 30-to-45-minute dining experience to preserve the integrity of the freshly made handrolls.

Top Roe’s menu in the izakaya-style dining room offers a small plate menu featuring agemono(fried dishes), yakimono (grilled dishes) and cold plates dictated by what’s available from Qui’s favorite local farms and meat and seafood purveyors.

Stay for a while if you’d like! The izakaya dining room is designed to welcome longer dining experiences than its in-and-out handroll bar counterpart.

Hand Roll Bar - Communal Counter Dining

Our hand roll bar has 12 available seats, and is a 45-minute dining experience. Pre determined sets and a la carte available. For our Hand Roll bar, limited seats are available as reservations and walk-ins are strongly encouraged. Parties of 3+ at the handroll bar may need to be split and sat at different times due to limited seating.
Izakaya - Shared Plates, Hand Rolls Not Available

Top Roe's Izakaya, a place to enjoy bar snacks and drinks in a dark and moody atmosphere. There's a robust sound system in the space adding to the Izakaya vibe. It caters to groups who want to enjoy classic Japanese offerings like sashimi, tempura, yakitori, and maki sushi rolls. Handrolls are not offered at the izakaya, but will only be available at the Handroll Bar. A selection of Japanese-inspired highballs, sake, and beer are offered for drinks .

Exquisite program chef Paul has assembled. We sat at the hand roll bar. Seaweed wrappings were crunchy. Tuna was vibrant. Yellowtail Sashimi melts in mouth, was quite provocative sensually. The atmosphere has that “the place to be” energy. Roe was on top. Our server, Gage, was delightfully attentive.

The food was so great and all dishes had a slightly different spin or flavor that other places don’t. Ambience was amazing!

I had high expectations for this place but there seems to be little to know focus on ambiance or service for the handroll bar. I was optimistic after sitting in the bar lounge for handroll bar seats to open up. The bar lounge is warm, lively and the bartenders are great but that’s where it ended. Once we arrived to the handroll seating, it was oddly lit. It feels cold and an afterthought. The cook has zero interactivity with guests and just would place the hand rolls. I’m used to the interaction with the chefs/cook being super fun and part of the experience. It was so stiff and impersonal. The rest of the dining room was super empty and quiet. I wish the rest of the restaurant matched the bar lounge.

Great variety and everything we tried (pretty much 75% of the menu) was delicious. Some items were out of stock, such as 2-3 sake selections, desert options, etc but I don’t expect 100% smooth operation within the early days of opening. The dry aged fish is great and I hope they expand those options! The main dining area has a dead space up against the back wall making the design a bit awkward, but perhaps it’s just temporary. Looking forward to trying the hand roll bar next time around. Best of luck!

Arrived at was greeted by the host & sat at the bar. The servers voice was low and I couldn’t hear her without leaning forward due to the loud music. The cook didn’t show any enthusiasm while preparing hand rolls nor did he interact with the guest (I’ve worked in the industry for many years as a cook, and open concept cooks are supposed to engage with guest). The cook also kept wiping his wrist in his brow, he did have gloves on his hands, but that wasn’t acceptable. The food was decent, but felt like it was missing a wow factor. The fish in the rolls was very cold, and the avocado was skimpy. Not once did the server ask if everything was ok, until we were paying our bill. I still tipped, but to be honest didn’t think a tip was deserved as we didn’t really receive service other than our food being prepared. As we were walking out, two employees were chatting by the curtain entrance, and we went the wrong way through the curtain because they were too distracted to point us in the right direction. The vibe isn’t the best for a date. I wouldn’t go again, instead go to “little nishi” or drive to Houston.

We tried it for the first time last night. It's a brand new place with excellent decor, very attentive staff, and a very cute manager who makes sure the whole place runs well. Try the tuna that comes on the little grill. But for sure try this place out if you like sushi.
