Casual, coastal restaurant in Bloomington. Reservations are taken for the dining room only, patio seating is available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Please check in with hosts upon arrival for patio seating.

Although named for the boats used to catch lobster, Smack Shack was launched as a food truck in 2010 serving lobster rolls from a land-locked downtown Minneapolis parking lot. Owner Josh Thoma had a great recipe and a belief that the appetite for fresh lobster in the Twin Cities was as strong as in any coastal city.

Smack Shack is committed to serving sustainable seafood and is a partner in the Minnesota Zoo’s Fish Smart program. Sustainable seafood is wild-caught or farm-raised seafood that has established practices to ensure the long-term growth and thriving populations of seafood with limited harm to the environment.

I had a special, the Dungeness crab. What a delicious treat. The serving staff was terrific, providing suggestions on tackling this very large and scrumptious crab. The atmosphere is comfortable—just perfect when you’re tackling large shellfish with a cracking too and a tiny fork!

I had fish and chips. But the fries were under seasoned and the the tartar sauce amount was woefully short of the three planks. Food was good overall, but if we are paying in the 20's and 30's per plate, I was not expecting to be charged additional tartar sauce to just bring it up to normal quantity standards. Also did not appreciate a couple dollars added on to the bill for a hiden Wellness Fee. Felt like this place does not need to nickle and dime the customer.

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      Food was expensive. 1 1/2-lb. lobster was $60, most other entrees +/- $30. Steamed lobster was overcooked and tough. Paella entree should have been saffron-seasoned but some spicier seasoning overpowered the flavor, and the mussels were inedible. A third diner in our party of six reported that his black cod entree was skimpy and left him hungry. Our server was pleasant. Our diners enjoyed their mixed drinks.
