A charming village pub nestled in the heart of West Hanningfield on the unspoiled greenbelt of the Essex city, Chelmsford. This soul-soothing, local pub offers a fresh, seasonal menu coupled with local craft beverages, all of which can be enjoyed in our vintage, east-coast setting. Our alfresco lawn is the perfect oasis for any passing visitor or returning local. Take in the panoramic views of the rolling hills or stay warm by our log burner snuggled inside. Both are perfect watching the world pass by with a drink in hand.

    Another great meal at The Ship. We did the Valentine's 5 course meal which was incredible value and service was excellent and friendly as usual. Look forward to coming back.

    From entering the establishment we were greeted with a very warm welcome. we were able to have a leisurely drink prior to our meal and was also offered the opportunity to have our meal earlier. the food was delicious and the service was very efficient and the staff were very polite and friendly. will definitely be returning again.

    Had to wait over an 1.5 hour or more for are main, and then was told that they only had a chef on the night. Got there at 7pm and had main at 8.50pm.!! Didn’t have time for dessert and had to push to get a discount the meal.!! Was hoping for a lovely evening, but wasn’t to be.? Won’t be going back for a night out there again. disappointing evening, TAKE NOTE…..MANAGER???

    We booked The Ship for a valentines set menu as it looked good at a reasonable price. A few days before the booking we received a phone call to ask for our starters and mains choice to help the chef organise the food needed. (I assume everyone had the same phone call) On arrival at the venue we were greeted by great staff, we were seated in what we found out later to be the public bar that had been decorated for the valentines special. We had bread at the table and were given a glass of champagne. The starters came and all was good - then it went downhill! It took several requests for the main which finally arrived 2 hours later. The 4 tables alongside us also had the same problem and we were all very disappointed by the lack of communication from the manager who to be honest avoided contact with the room. When finally one of the diners caught the managers attention to complain about all of our treatment and he finally offered 50% off the bill. He then informed us that there was a problem with the chef, I assume lack of staff to help. I must add that when the food finally arrived it was faultless. What let the venue down was the lack/no communication from the manager. We certainly won't risk booking again, which is a shame as the rest of the staff did try to assist us but it was out of their hands. Also the food was good when it finally arrived.

    This not the pub to go to for a quick cheap meal, It is good quality reastaurant standard food pleasant staff nice suroundings. we had no complaints. I would rather pay the extra that you have to hear and go home happy. which is what we did.

    Lovely olde world pub, food was superb ,staff were excellent, mind your head if you're over 6 foot as beams can be tricky! Overall a fantastic little pub,will definitely be back

    Definitely worth a visit. The food was piping hot and a warm welcome from all the staff. Large portions and food very fresh All 5 people didn’t have anything negative to say
