The Shepherd & Dog has maintained all the traditions you would expect in a country pub but with an unrivalled view in an outstanding setting at the bottom of Devils Dyke. The fabulous Sunday Roast is on offer from noon, serving all the way to the last booking at 5.30PM. Locally sourced, seasonal food menus showcasing the best of the local area. We have received BRAVO restaurant awards in the top pubs category, year after year.
All craft beers are local, exclusive or unusual in some way - no run of the mill here!

Whilst the food, service and overall experience was as fabulous as ever, it is very disappointing that the menu no longer contains as many gluten-free dishes as it used to. Our daughter is coeliac, so discovering the Shepherd and Dog a while ago, with its extensive selection of gluten-free dishes, immediately made it our favourite go-to venue for a family meal. We have visited many times since, always thankful that we have found somewhere warm, friendly and offering our daughter a far greater choice than the majority of pubs and restaurants. In a world where there is still scant choice of eateries for coeliacs, we sincerely hope that the current menu is adapted once more, to allow us to continue treating the Shepherd and Dog as our top destination for great food.

Had a nice lunch today at the S & D, three adults and two very young children. Staff very accommodating and helpful which made our experience most pleasant. Food portions are very generous and good value for money. Will definitely go again.

The soup starter was served without a spoon, had to leave the table to find a member of staff to get one. The steak tartar starter barely has any egg yoke so was missing that richness it gives, the tartare itself only tasted of whatever sauce that it was mixed with. The chips that came with the £60 sirloin sharing platter were over cooked, dry & cold. Coffee was served without sugar or spoons. While a member of staff was laying out a neighbouring table he dropped the fork on the floor and just put it back on the table even though the place was full of dogs.

After being a favourite for a few years we found our experience this time disappointing sadly (a rare lunch out without the kids for my wife's birthday). Its like they've started cutting corners with the food. Maybe even buying it in. The beef and mushroom pie filling was somewhat reminiscent of cat food (little thin squares of sliced beef, rather than tender chunky pieces), the malbec was really cold (a cold winter's day), and the rhubarb fool with shortbread and ice cream didn't come with either shortbread or ice cream, nor was it like a traditional fool. More a big bowl of slop with some pieces of rhubarb sprinkled on top. We told the staff and were told the ice cream had been stirred in and the chef was making a new one. All very odd and we said not to worry. The salted caramel tart was nicer but the pastry was rock solid. When eating out costs so much these days it is a shame when it is a let down, especially when an establishment has previously had a good reputation.

Over an hours wait for the food took far too long Was refused the standard menu on Valentine’s Day & then overheard another person ordering it ! Well overpriced for such slow service

Wonderful atmosphere- next to a fire which was so needed in the winter day that it was. Service was impeccable and food delicious.

It was very cold, even with a Dyson heater near us we were cold the whole time. The toilets were like fridges. We found it expensive so not good value for money

The restaurant was very cold, we had to put our coats on, the Sussex sharer starter was not good value for money, it had bread, 2 small bits of cheese 3 bits of salami and some really small pots of dip for £18.00. Burgers were good, steak was Luke warm.

It was very cold in the pub, even though it was the hottest the staff could get it. My mother sat with her coat round her, as did others. They ran out of the sharing starter (salami, brie, etc) and of the 4 red wines listed by the glass, one was a chilled one, and 2 they had run out of. It was a limited menu. The staff were very nice and none of it was their fault, but I wouldn't go again, especially in winter.
