Situated down a quiet side street, on the corner of elegant St Peter’s Square, The Carpenter’s Arms is an independent nineteenth-century pub with a beautiful garden where the food is the star.

We focus on simple, beautifully cooked seasonal food. Our menu and Specials Board change daily: Simply cooked sustainable fish; British meats; delicious vegetarian and vegan dishes and tempting puddings to finish. Simple dishes, big flavours.

We are just as serious about good drink as we are about good food. Our well stocked bar helps keep the relaxed and convivial spirit of a local boozer very much alive.

We operate a rotating list of guest real ales, as well as world wines from just under £30 a bottle. We also serve the only cocktails worth filling the glass for – a negroni for lunch, a martini before dinner, an Old Fashioned when you need a stiff drink, a Margarita for when you want to pretend you’re on holiday and a Bloody Mary for the morning after.

Great for a Sunday roast! We always try and get a place by the fire. Lovely atmosphere and incredible sticky toffee pudding! Only small negative would be that the chef tends to seriously overcook the Yorkshire pudding to the point it’s no longer edible. Rest of the lamb roast is gorgeous though!

Lovely service. Very expensive for two people at a total of £115 for two roast dinners and one starter and two desserts. Personal gripe with the potatoes which seemed more boiled than roasted. I know they were roasted but not great.

We had a delicious meal here last week for Valentine's Day, however on arrival we were told that we only had our table for an hour and a half, with no prior warning during the booking process. As a result, it was clear that the staff were under serious pressure and it led to a feeling of being rushed on what was a special occasion. On top of this, it did very feel crammed with the tables either side extremely close which takes away from the normally excellent atmosphere. With all that being said, we had a lovely time despite the circumstances, but we did feel the need to leave a review as it felt like a bit of a shame for what should have been an all round excellent meal.

Excellent evening. Only marking down on service as they were so busy but did not in any way detract from wonderful food, wine, and brilliant atmosphere. Can't wait to go again.

Our 1st visit having.moved to the area recently. We visited Sunday evening and were really impressed great service and sat next to the fire just what was needed on a cold night. Food was excellent and we will be back very soon. We booked again whilst we were there!

We had a wonderful dinner at the Carpenter’s Arms. It is so cosy and welcoming with a large open fire and a laid back, inviting atmosphere. The staff were very attentive and friendly and knowledgable about the menu. The food was delicious - I had the gnocchi and my friend had the chicken breast and we both had a glass of Malbec. This is the perfect spot for a catch up dinner or a special occasion dinner. I could not recommend highly enough!

A wonderful surprise on a Monday night with live music and log fire providing a cosy February evening. Delicious food - particularly the gnocchi - and great drinks selections
