Proper 21, brought to DC from the New York City restaurateurs Rob Zahn and Will Strozier that own Manhattan Proper and Proper West, opened in early October 2016. Located at 1319 F Street NW, Proper 21 is a high end sports bar serving All American classics with a gourmet twist. Proper 21 is the third location of NIEUW Group Inc.

Like its predecessors, located in New York City, Proper 21 serves contemporary American cuisine. The space maintains the modern aesthetic and New York style of the Manhattan locations, which have best been described as Tom Ford meets Thomas Edison. The restaurant provides the best audio & visual for sports, corporate functions, nightlife and other events.

Proper 21 requests reservations be made 45 minutes in advance.

Portions were smaller than expected, but the overall quality of the food was good. Neither one if us are big eaters, but both left less than full (eating entree salads with protein).

I chose this restaurant for its proximity to the National Theater. While our server was friendly, the service was unacceptably slow, likely due to being short-staffed. The only decent items were the Caesar Salad and the Bira egg rolls. The Proper Burger had an off taste, the bacon was soggy, and the bun was mushy. The Broccolini appeared microwaved rather than sautéed, and the Cauliflower Steak was unappetizing. The bread was a soggy multigrain. Overall, this experience was disappointing, and I will not be returning.

It was really loud for a dinner spot. Food was good and even with a busy and crowded evening our waitress was great and rushed for us. But could hardly hear my husband the whole time, even when I moved to sit right next to him

Service was excellent. Menu was fine except for limited options for someone (me) who is gluten-free. Most of us had the burger. As for ambience, very dark. Lights on table would be helpful. Saw other customers using flashlight on their phones to read menu.

We had a great experience at Proper 21 in DC! The food was delicious, and the service was excellent… our server was attentive and made sure everything was perfect. The highlight was the dessert. We tried the churro, and it was hands down one of the best we’ve ever had. It was crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and perfectly paired with creamy vanilla ice cream. If you’re in DC, Proper 21 is a must-visit for great food, excellent service, and unforgettable dessert!

We almost had to shout across the table to be heard. My wife’s Chicken sandwich was good but my short ribs were a disaster. I could hardly cut through them. I took one bite and had to spit it out. The potatoes and veggies were ok - but not worth the money. We had to make the show at National Theater so had no time to take it back or get a credit for my meal. This was our first and only visit to this over crowded under staffed restaurant.
