Pausa, a bar and cookery in San Mateo, calls for guests to take a recess from life and enjoy a dining experience that transports them to a place of leisure. With a strong focus on modern Italian, our menu will consist of house-made pasta, wood-fired pizza, wood-fired grill, and house-cured meats. Our friendly and knowledgeable team will ensure your pause is a memorable one.

We are now taking reservations for our patio tables, bar, and indoor tables. As we practice social distancing with our new limited floor plan, we ask that you and your guests limit your dining to 2 hours to accommodate all reservations.

When checking table availability, if outdoor seating is not an option to select, then your reservation will be for an indoor table as the outdoor may be booked.

    Amazing food and amazing staff. Cannot recommend this place highly enough. You absolutely HAVE to give this a try even if you’re not a fan of Italian food. Their Margherita pizza is phenomenal as is their cheese board and bone marrow appetizer. This is a food experience you’ll likely not forget.

    The service was phenomenal and the food was fantastic. This was my first time here and definitely going to become one of my favorites in 2025!!

    Thanks for making my daughter’s 18th birthday celebration special. It was super cool to see ‘Happy 18th Birthday’ on the printed menu. It will make for a memorable keepsake! Our waiter was super friendly, courteous, and personable. Food was super amazing as usual. Thanks again for helping to celebrate this big milestone.

    TL;DR : If you’re considering going, hit PAUSE. Food: Focaccia bread special (tall stack) arrived toasted on the top. Cold in the middle. Wet in the bottom. Was replaced after pointing out. Didn’t have any character of real focaccia. Avoid! Burrata was runny. Good crackers with it, but greasy grilled bread. Avoid. Margherita pizza not bad. Pork belly with garnishing ok. Zabaglione wasn’t one. Tasteless cold granola like mush topped with kiwi whipped cream is a better description. Avoid. Service: Most of the time our stewardess was missing. Found ourselves listening to the steward at the next table. Wine arrived after first course arrived. Ambience: what a crowded beer hall feel! Reminds one of an upscale diner. Maybe our neighborhood restaurants have become this “award-winning” places where basics are tossed out for sizzle?

    Pausa’s staff and food always leave us impressed. The seasonal and innovative menu is full of a variety of typical dishes beautifully reimagined by Pausa’s chef. Pausa needs to be experienced to believe. ANYTHING you order will have you oohing and left in awe. Highly recommend trying everything
