El Max's Café se construyó en 1890 como una zapatería. En 1912, el 34 de North Burlington Street abrió de nuevo como Leisinger's Saloon, que duró 25 años, incluso en la época de la ley seca (como "establecimiento de refrescos"). En 1937, el Leisinger's Saloon pasó a través de la familia y se renombró como Max's Cafe; su nombre durante los 65 años siguientes. En 1977, un nuevo menú de mariscos frescos preparados de forma sencilla transformó el Max's Cafe en el Max's Seafood Café. El edificio de al lado fue adquirido para poder acomodar al creciente número de clientes de ambos lados del río Delaware, que a menudo formaban una cola que daba la vuelta a la esquina, esperando para disfrutar de lenguado fresco, camarones, almejas y, sobre todo, mejillones al vapor. El restaurante bar cerró en julio de 1998 y se mantuvo inactivo durante 2 años y medio. El Max's Seafood Cafe, reformado a finales de 2000, volvió a abrir el 2 de junio de 2001 para continuar ofreciendo la hospitalidad de siempre, el marisco impecablemente fresco y los mejillones al vapor.

Food was delightful and service was good. Only one complaint….we were having soft drinks (diet soda) with our meal but were unaware that the glasses of soda were not refillable. When we were given the bill of fare we learned that we were charged for each refill adding 5 extra charges for our party’s refills. We paid it and did not complain but felt we could have been made aware that our beverages were not refillable.

Seafood dishes were excellent. Drinks were fantastic. Little above market pricing but was worth the few extra dollars. Staff was very attentive.

Always a great experience at Max's. Had the seafood pescatore and everything seemed fresh. Great dish, great experience. Love this place.

Food was disappointing for the price. Also, seemed like they may have been short staffed. There are much better seafood places for the amount of money we spent.

We were eager to try Max's after hearing so many positive reviews, but after our visit, I have nothing good to say. Our reservation was 40-45 minutes late, and the seating process was disorganized with no sense of urgency. Once we were finally seated, things didn’t improve much. We were given a pre fix menu with options that weren’t available. The service was slow, lacking personality, and the waiter seemed inexperienced. The food was decent, but the overall experience was marred by all the other issues. Unless they were just having an off night, it seems like Max’s took on more than they could handle for Valentine’s Day. I wouldn’t recommend it.

Sheri and John are awesome. I can’t believe what a great job they did on one of the busiest nights of the year. They were fantastic!

Food was overpriced for the quality - don't think I've ever had a lobster quite as tasteless. They also sat us next to an open/broken window that could not be closed/fixed (weather was 25 degrees and windy outside) and instead of moving our table (plenty were open as we arrived at 4:30PM), they stuffed a tablecloth in the gap which did very little to fix it. Server was very uncaring (perhaps new?) and made a few mistakes, but I can't fault him for that, only his attitude. Shame because the other wait staff there seem great, especially one gentleman who was the life of the party there. Anyway, perhaps it was a bad day for them/our waiter, but still. I will not be going back.
