El restaurante Brown and Loe está ubicado en el histórico City Market de Kansas City, y su acogedor ambiente es una fusión de bistro "de la gran ciudad" con el sabor casual de un favorito de la zona. El restaurante ocupa el lugar del antiguo Merchant’s Bank construido en 1920, y conserva los detalles arquitectónicos del edificio de dos plantas con la fachada de hoja de vidrio y pisos y muros construidos con mármol verde. En los años 40 Brown and Loe era originalmente un comerciante de verduras cuyas oficinas se encontraban en el segundo piso del edificio de Merchant’s Bank. El nuevo restaurante Brown and Loe rinde homenaje a las técnicas de curado, encurtido y ahumado de la carne, traducidas de forma maravillosa en su gastronomía casera estadounidense. Este es de verdad un lugar local, a juzgar por la lealtad del restaurante hacia los agricultores de la zona y artesanos culinarios quienes proveen la mayoría de los ingredientes frescos del restaurante. El restaurante Brown and Loe es el segundo concepto culinario de Harry Murphy, propietario del popular Harry’s Country Club del City Market.

We love Brown & Loe. They make the best Manhattan. We tried the Peruvian Guacamole last night, and it was really good. It was a little sweet…which I did not expect. We ordered steak frites and the meatloaf. I am not a fan of truffle anything, so the fries were not my favorite. The meatloaf is always good. We ended the meal with a scoop of peanut butter and jelly ice cream…delicious. Our server was fantastic!

We were there on a snowy night, so the restaurant was relatively quiet, but our server was attentive, and the food was delicious. I had the short rib french dip - ohmygoodness it was tasty! My date had the meatloaf - it was tender and flavorful. The bacon green beans were perfectly steamed and delicious.

Sooo nice! I was celebrating my birthday and the servers were all super nice. I was able to have such a good day! Plus the food and drinks are sooo good.

We were in from out of town and wanted a warm comforting meal. This establishment was exactly what I envisioned: 1930s California Diner that was welcoming and not pretentious. We started with the hushpuppies and was surprised when the ingredients (whole cold jalapeños, pork belly, hot honey) were not combined in the hushpuppy, but rather all separate. It made for a fun experience combining the ingredients into a tasty bite, but we couldn't help imagine them prepared differently. I chose the Meatloaf entrée. It was paired with green beans + bacon and goat cheese mashed potatoes. The loaf was supple and exactly as you'd expect grandma to make. The beans were crisp and tender, though a bit salty for my taste. I appreciated the ample helping of potatoes, however the flavor of goat cheese was absent. My partner ordered the spaghetti squash. He enjoyed it quite a lot. The squash had the perfect bite; cooked perfectly where it was still a bit firm and not mush. The meal description stated tree nuts, but not which type. This is because it is a mixed array of pine, pecan, pistachio... he felt it would have been better if it was one tree nut type. Also, the presence of mushrooms was lacking. Overall, we enjoyed our time. Service was fast and easy. We were in and out in an hour. I couldn't help but wonder: Is Brown and Loe an eatery where upper middle class folks go for a casual dining experience? The pricing was a bit inflated for the type of food served, but the experience and service helped me understand the price point. Brown and Loe is a finer dining experience offering familiar foods. I would absolutely come back when in KCMO again and try other items on the menu!
