Bad Idea is East Nashville's buzziest new restaurant from Sommelier Alex Burch and Executive Chef Colby Rasavong. It was honored as one of the 50 Best Restaurants in America in 2024 by the New York Times. New York Times food writer Brett Anderson remarks “Bad Idea may well be what many seasoned diners thought when they heard there was a wine bar specializing in envelope-pushing Lao food opening inside an East Nashville church. But given the level of cooking here, the name turned out to be a self-aware joke, rather than a
self-own…[Rasavong] invests the weight of his life experience in food that stretches the boundaries of
Southeast Asian cooking to the edge of Appalachia. And the wine list is wise beyond this restaurant’s
years, mixing tantalizing obscurities, affordable crowd pleasers and connoisseur selections you’ll rarely
find poured by the glass.” Bad Idea was also named a semifinalist for Best New Restaurant in the 2025 James
Beard Awards.

Del equipo editorial de OpenTable: Chef Colby Rasavong leans on his Lao heritage at this one-of-a-kind East Nashville wine bar that Bon Appétit dubbed one of its most eagerly anticipated openings in 2023. Sommelier Alex Burch's exciting, global wine list, which includes selections from South Africa, Hungary, and Portugal, sets the stage for Rasavong's ever-changing menu. Expect inventive dishes like a sausage roll with Calabrian chiles and lemongrass, mushroom tartare, and pot pie and noodle soup all served in a spacious bi-level former church with arched windows overlooking the street. The New York Times named Bad Idea one of its 50 favorites around the country in 2024.

    Everything about this restaurant truly lives up to its name—a bad idea from start to finish, including the menu, service, and atmosphere. We did the Prix Fixe menu collaboration with Iggy, which turned out to be an absolute disaster. The entire meal was shareable, yet completely flavorless. From the underwhelming truffle dish (plate was under the heat lamp too long so came out dry/ hard crusted pasta) to the overcooked and cold foie gras, and the baffling decision to put caviar on a cold cake, every course felt like a mistake. The service was just as disappointing. When we arrived, several employees at the bar made eye contact with us but did nothing—no greeting, no acknowledgment. Our waitress simply dropped off the food without so much as an explanation or interaction. For a $300 price tag, this experience was nothing short of outrageous. A total disappointment that I wouldn’t recommend to anyone.

    This was a fun collaboration, but I would have appreciated more discussion with the collaborating chefs and staff about the courses and pairings.

    The collaboration of talent between Ryan Poli from Iggy's and Bad Idea was amazing. Every bite was truly fabulous. The wine pairing was exceptional as well. So glad that we had this unique opportunity and experience!

    For such a beautiful space its unfortunate that the staff make no effort to dress well. We had a pretty arrogant server take our drink order and just overall didnt feel like the experience was what we were hoping or expecting so we ordered one small plate (really delicious) and decided to leave early. A better cocktail list would be good too.

    It all went ok (not amazing at all, but not bad either) until we got to the mains. Extremely pricey, not big enough, and accompanied by inexplicably small portion of the cabbage side & the sauces (and too much salad). The fried fish in particular earned the dubious honor of being called "the worst price quality ratio I've ever seen" by my friend. (And we live in NYC!) But it was earned: $70 for a few pieces of fried fish. Incredible.

    Waitress was too pushy on amount of dishes to order. She also took a while to take our drink order. Slightly unprofessional/not the vibe I’m looking for when visiting a restaurant of such prestige Food was freakin awesome! Little too spicy, and order damn hot at Hattie B’s On the reg Incredible atmosphere and space! Overall, great night!

    The ambiance was very nice. Food was not tasty. I couldn't identify what I was eating. It was supposed to be yellow fin tuna.

    Food was an experience! Small portions as they value ambience, wine and delicately built plates. Server Callan was amazing, the owner came by to show us our chosen wine - AJ Adam. Would recommend getting multiple small plates with one large entree. Going back again soon! Only downfall in my opinion was parking - highly trafficked area and may have to park down street, not a big deal though!
