I visited Gertrude Place for the 3rd time with my partner and our baby, and while the food was amazing each time, the overall experience left a sour taste.
When we arrived yesterday without a reservation, we were told nothing was available—even though we saw reserved empty sections (the 4×4 tables and a mix of 2×2 seats). My partner insisted we give it a try, so I quickly booked a table through the app for 11:15.
Inside, only three staff members were working at the bar: one was busy making cafés/drinks, another was running around seating people, cleaning tables, and delivering food, and the last was handling orders and payments. This small team struggled to keep up. We experienced a delay in having our order taken, and with a baby in tow, we found it tough to maneuver—the baby chair had to be moved several times just to let the staff pass.
The food was top-notch—clean, simple, tasty, and beautifully presented. However, the disorganized service and lack of a welcoming vibe really stood out. Despite the excellent cuisine and the hardworking staff doing their best, I left with a feeling of sadness and an overall sense of not being welcomed. Plus, while the place is pet-friendly (dogs are allowed, even if a bit of fur is always around), the entire experience just wasn’t smooth enough.
In short, despite the fantastic food, the reservation hassle and understaffed, chaotic service mean I won’t be returning.
