En 1912, Joe Jahrus, de 23 años, creó la compañía Laguna Lumber. Junto con su padre (fabricante de puros, primer director general de correos y agente inmobiliario), construyeron el precioso edificio de estilo normando que existe hoy en día. Antes de la apertura del almacén de madera, los materiales de construcción tenían que transportarse en mulas o flotando en el mar. De ahí que Laguna Beach contase con menos de 300 residentes permanentes por aquel entonces. Una vez inaugurado el almacén, la zona empezó a crecer a un ritmo sin precedentes, convirtiéndose en una ciudad próspera. La compañía Laguna Lumber operó durante 73 años, 62 de ellos en esta misma ubicación. Su arquitectura, inspirada en los viajes de Joe por el extranjero durante la Primera Guerra Mundial, es una de las influencias más importantes en la estética de la ciudad. Debido a este edificio, muchos de las fachadas de tiendas y casas de la ciudad presentan paredes de barro, techos de teja y entramados de madera. En la actualidad, el número 384 de la avenida Forest es la sede del Lumberyard, un restaurante estadounidense contemporáneo.
