Neiman Marcus got into the food business in the late 1940's because one of the company's founders, Herbert Marcus Sr., was tired of the substandard food in downtown Dallas. His eyesight was failing as a result of hypertension, and making lunchtime excursions was becoming more difficult. One day his son Mr. Stanley, remarked half-jokingly, 'Well, you may be forced to open your own kitchen, dedicated to meeting your very exacting demands.' Soon after, Mr. Stanley hired a cook to prepare lunches for his father in a small room on the top floor of the store. He would invite vendors and guests to have lunch with him, and pretty soon his penthouse space became a popular venue and a busy place. After his death in 1950, Mr. Stanley embarked on expanding and remodeling the store. Mr. Stanley, who was by then president and chief executive officer of Neiman Marcus, decided that having a full-service restaurant on one of the new floors would help keep customers in the store when they came for a day of shopping. After all, a sated shopper is a happy shopper. And so, in 1953, the Zodiac Room was opened. Neiman Marcus Cookbook 2003

We normally love our dining experience but not today. Food was bad. After the first bite we knew something was wrong. Chicken sandwich was rubber and not able to cut with a knife. Tuna salad was extremely fishy. Our server offered to replace but we decided a day after Christmas freshness was not good so we declined. Unfortunately we both had stomach issues within the hour after lunch. Not good experience sadly.

Sadly, the food was terrible. The recipes have changed over the years. I was ill after my lunch today. I won’t return to what used to be a favorite place. The service was also slow and unfriendly. A tray of popovers was spilled throughout the restaurant disrupting service. Dessert was not offered. My friends and I will find another place to celebrate the holidays next year. Change is not always good!

Wonderful experience as usual! We were treated to the Christmas cocktail, which was fabulous and enjoyed a little bubbly too with our annual best friend’s Christmas lunch. The popovers were super fresh and the strawberry butter is a nice touch. I had one of my go to’s - always either salmon tacos or the sampler…love the chicken salad sandwich. It was all delicious, service was excellent, and the Christmas decorations made for a pretty view.

Our group has been coming here for 10 years for our Christmas get together The food, service, and atmosphere is always wonderful! The decorations are lovely!

Food was better than Northpark! It was delicious, tasted more fresh, and presentation was beautiful! Had a GREAT holiday lunch.

Perfect holiday lunch destination. Relaxing ambience. Traditional NM menu fare especially chicken broth and fresh popovers. Lovely service in an unhurried setting. Perfect respite from Xmas shopping.
