The Bateman Arms was built c.1750 by Sir James Bateman (Lord Mayor Of London) as a building where his Estate workers would collect on pay day. Over the years it became a staging post for weary Drovers to refresh themselves as they walked livestock from West Wales to markets in Birmingham and London.Today, Mike Pope and his team provide a warm welcome to both locals and the many business and leisure visitors who travel to the Marches throughout the year.     From the genuinely friendly welcome to the pleasure of enjoying excellent local produce in lovely intimate surroundings, we thoroughly enjoyed our whole experience. We have been equally delighted on our previous visits and it is reassuring to have experienced the same again. This, to us, is a mark of the quality of staff that The Riverside retains. A lovely day and a very big thank you to everybody at The Riverside who ensured that this birthday visit was a great success.

    We had a table booked for 7.30pm on a busy Sunday evening. We arrived just before and were seated very quickly. There was no rush with ordering but once we did the service was very quick. We had finished by 8.10pm and the service was excellent. Overall a wonderful evening, we will definitely be returning.

    Food was exceptional, my potatoes were cold and the dish was freshly made again for me, disappointed I couldn’t eat at the same time as my husband but the food made up for this when mine arrived! Highly recommend.

    Hearty food cooked with flare. Always flavourful and beautifully presented. The owners and staff are very welcoming and accommodating. Nice selection of beers. The inn has bags of character and has a friendly atmosphere with a mix of locals and visitors. The whole family live this place which makes the 25 mile drive worth it. Faultless
