Spike Africa, el "Presidente del océano Pacífico", fue el último de los grandes capitanes de barcos veleros en zarpar de la Costa Oeste. Aprendió a navegar al enlistarse en el K.V. Kruse, un barco velero de 5 mástiles que transportaba madera de Seattle a Alaska. Spike es mejor conocido por el intrépido viaje que realizó con el actor Sterling Hayden y su familia, el cual culminó en Tahití en 1958, y del que habla Hayden en su novela clásica marítima "Wanderer" (Vagabundo). Spike fue teniente de los Seabees (una unidad de la armada de Estados Unidos especializada en obras de ingeniería y construcción) durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial y luchó en la sangrienta batalla de la isla Peleliu como se muestra en la mini serie de HBO "Pacific". Spike también fue actor novato por un tiempo, apareciendo en la película "Permiso para amar hasta medianoche" (Cinderella Liberty). Fue una leyenda en prácticamente todos los puertos de la Costa Oeste, conocido como un marinero de espíritu libre, el "último de su especie".
