Thomas Makris, originario de la isla de Skopelos, se enamoró de Helen Babalos cuando la conoció. Se encontraron por primera vez en 1974 en el restaurante Orestes Greek, mientras viajaban por Norteamérica como parte de un grupo de danzas griegas. Al poco tiempo de casarse tuvieron la idea de abrir un restaurante griego en donde todos son tratados como familia y disfrutan de una experiencia consistente con la deliciosa comida casera auténtica y un servicio impecable, algo único en Vancouver. Así abrieron Anatoli Souvlaki en 1984 al norte de Vancouver. Anatoli Souvlaki was opened by Helen & Thomas in the spring of 1984. They had a dream of combining the food of Greece with great service to add some Mediterranean style to the North Vancouver restaurant selection. They opened in the sleepy neighbourhood of lower Lonsdale and lived above the restaurant to ensure the quality and service. They were able to create a North Vancouver staple, a successful thriving restaurant based on faithful patrons and a reputation that has been passed through generations.
